You have just begun your job search. You’re not sure what defines a “dream job” for you, but you are sure of one thing–you want to work at it during the daytime. Many workers think of day shift, which usually runs from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, as the ideal time to be at work.
And there are good reasons for thinking that. You’re at work when the majority of people, including your friends and spouse, are working; more activities are going on in the evening than late at night; and if you have school-age children, you get to see them after work.
But there’s a problem: Most of the desirable jobs in Painesville, Ohio are available on the second shift only, and you’ve already convinced yourself that working from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm will somehow destroy your life. However, many people work the afternoon shift and prefer it to the day shift or the so-called “graveyard shift” that starts at 11:00 pm and ends at 7:00 am.
The Advantages of Working Second Shift
You’ll Make More Money
If you are paid by the hour, your rate of pay for working the day shift is called your base rate. If, however, you are willing to work on the second shift, most companies will add a “shift differential” to your base rate. Although it will vary from company to company, you will typically see an increase of ten percent over the base rate.
Also keep in mind that the higher rate is used when calculating weekend work, which is paid at either one-and-a-half times your hourly rate or, in some cases, double your rate. There is one caveat: Some companies pay the base rate for holidays and vacations, even if you are working second shift permanently. Check with your employer for their policy on this.
You Can Sleep In
If you don’t start you shift until 3:00 pm, you won’t be setting your alarm for 6:00 am. As a matter of fact, you might not be setting the alarm at all. Most second-shift workers manage to get to bed by around 1:00 am and get up at about 9:00. This schedule gives them plenty of time to get things done around the house or run errands (in lighter crowds) before getting ready for work. And you’ll never have to rush to catch the bank or post office before it closes.
You Could Save Money on Childcare
If you work second shift and your spouse works days, your preschoolers can be raised at home rather than at a daycare center. They get the best care, and you save money.
More Time Off
Some companies are giving extra paid days off instead of offering a shift differential. To some employees, that’s a better deal than more money.
