Get Ready for 2018 with a Few Lessons from Amazing Leaders

During this time of year, many people begin looking toward the future. With the new year being just around the corner, the idea of starting it off right is on the minds of many. You may be wondering what it takes to get ahead in today’s job market or how you can best position yourself to advance in your career, trying to determine what path is right for you.

Luckily, many of the world’s leading professionals are very open about their “secrets” for success. So, whether you have your eye on a promotional opportunity in your current company, one of the area’s coveted Lubrizol jobs, or just want to be prepared to take advantage of what the future holds, here are some lessons from amazing leaders that can help you get ready for 2018.

Invite (Some) Risk into Your Life

Innovators like Elon Musk and Richard Branson didn’t get where they are today by always playing it safe. In fact, many of these professionals embraced risk with open arms to help them get where they wanted to be.

Taking a risk can actually be very beneficial to your career, but you have to make sure you aren’t being reckless. Calculated risk-taking involves making a leap and being bold, but it doesn’t mean you jump before you’ve assessed the situation.

For example, if you’ve had a great year at work and experienced many professional accomplishments, approaching your manager about a potential raise could be seen as a calculated risk. Similarly, applying for a new job in a higher-level position is technically a bold move. In both cases, the payoff could be substantial, and the likelihood that you would be harmed by the outcome would usually be low, which can make it worth the risk.

Failure Isn’t the End

Yes, facing a setback is hard, and failing can certainly hurt your confidence. But, typically, a failure doesn’t signal the end of your journey, and you often can’t move forward if you don’t face your fear and try.

Anyone who has tried something new and innovative has likely failed at some point, as not every idea is going to pan out. But, being able to pick yourself up, assess the outcome, and then try again is giving themselves the opportunity to experience big things. Sometimes the best ideas will only come after something else has crashed and burned, so learn from your mistakes, dust yourself off, and take your new knowledge with you as you try again.

By being open to taking a risk and not seeing a failure as the end of the road, you can position yourself to have a great year in 2018. So, assess your situation, imagine what is possible, and see what it would take to get from where you are to where you want to be. Then, make 2018 your year and give it a try.
