Want to Get Better at Your Job? Start by Improving Your Personal Life and Creating Balance

It doesn’t matter if you read it in a self-help book or heard it from employment firms in Mentor Ohio; the advice is timeless and accurate—if you want to be a top-notch employee, you must create balance in your life.

Sure, you’ve also heard about the workaholic who dedicates seventy or more hours each week to working, and you marvel at the devotion of this individual and how fortunate any company would be to have him working for them.

But hold on a minute! Recent studies have shown that well-rounded employees are the most productive workers, and the most successful companies are those that encourage employee health and well-being, which enhances their performance and efficiency.

Here are some ways that you can improve your life at home and on the job:

Make time for family and friends

If your career is harming your personal relationships, both will suffer. Your greatest fulfillment comes from time spent with loved ones and friends. If working long hours becomes the rule rather than the exception, your relationships can become strained, and you will find less satisfaction in your job. By making family and friends a priority, you will be more efficient and productive on the job.

Don’t waste your time

These words of wisdom might sound like something from Time Management 101, but they bear repeating. Employees are too often spending time on activities that drain their time and energy.

A few examples:

  • Gossiping with colleagues: No way to enhance your career
  • Social media and the web: A modern time thief
  • Personal calls at work: Allowing your private life to encroach on your career

The list goes on, but the message is the same: If an activity doesn’t enhance your career or personal life, don’t waste time on it.

Set your priorities

Time with your family and friends can be hard to come by. There are so many chores that you must tackle around the house, and they don’t seem to leave much time for anything else. Maybe it’s time to consider outsourcing some of those tasks:

  • Hire a cleaning service: Cleaning your house takes hours every week.
  • Pay a kid to mow your lawn: Depending on the size of your yard, it’s a small investment
  • Cut your grocery shopping time: Order online and have them delivered

These ideas and others like them may be more expensive, but if they free you up to spend time with the people you care about, they might be worth every dollar.

Take care of yourself

If you are not in good shape physically, mentally, and emotionally, your personal and work life will both deteriorate. It may be difficult to find time to exercise on your busy schedule, but the boost in energy you will get from being fit will make the time spent well worth it.
